NOUNS & ADJECTIVES

Today we are going to study nouns and adjectives.

We already know that the verb ser (to be) is used with adjectives. Adjectives are words which describe the characteristics of a noun: small, touristic, famous, beautiful, ugly…

Adjectives also have a masculine and feminine form, as well as a singular and plural form.

pequeño, pequeña, pequeños, pequeñas

When the noun is feminine and singular, Barcelona for example, the accompanying adjective must also be feminine and singular.

Barcelona es pequeña.
Barcelona is small.

When the noun is masculine and singular, for example “hotel”, the accompanying adjective must also be masculine and singular.

El hotel es pequeño.
The hotel is small.

When the noun is singular we use the third person form of the verb “ser” – ES (is). When the noun is plural we use the third person form of the verb “ser” – SON (are).

Los hoteles son pequeños.
The hotels are small.
